Muskingum Valley League

The Muskingum Valley League was established in 1938 as the successor to the Big Five League, organized December 15, 1930, which became the Big Six League in 1933. Beginning in the fall of 2020, the MVL consists of twelve schools in good standing with league rules and Ohio High School Athletic Association regulations.

Original membership dates

Crooksville (1930), John Glenn (1930 with name change from New Concord in 1962), Morgan (1930 with name change from Malta-McConnelsville and county consolidation in 1966), New Lexington (1930 with the addition of Junction City in 1961), Philo (1938 with the addition of Roseville in 1970), Tri-Valley (1950 as Dresden with the addition of Adamsville and Frazeysburg-Nashport and name change in 1966), Maysville (1963), Sheridan (1966), West Muskingum (1966), River View (1974), Coshocton (2020), and Meadowbrook (2020). Some schools joined the league after consolidation occurred in their school district.

MVL Membership Timeline

The MVL predecessor, the Big Five League, begins competition with Crooksville Big Red, Glouster Tomcats, Malta-McConnelsville Big Reds, New Concord Little Muskies, and New Lexington Panthers.

The Caldwell Redskins join, and the league's name changes to the Big Six League.

The Crooksville Big Reds change their nickname to the Crooksville Ceramics.

The Muskingum Valley League is created when the Philo Electrics join the members of the Big Six League, bringing the league to seven teams.

The MVL disbands for one season because of wartime gas rationing.

The MVL resumes with new members St. Thomas Irish and Roseville Ramblers, bringing the league to nine teams.

St. Thomas leaves the league, reducing membership to eight teams.

Dresden's Jefferson J-Hawks join, bringing the league to nine teams.

The New Concord Little Muskies become the John Glenn Little Muskies.

The Maysville Panthers join, bringing the league to ten teams.

Caldwell leaves the league, reducing membership to nine teams.

Glouster leaves the league, reducing membership to eight teams.

The Sheridan Generals and West Muskingum Tornadoes join, bringing the league to ten teams. Malta-McConnelsville becomes the Morgan Raiders as schools in Morgan County consolidate. Dresden's Jefferson consolidates with Adamsville and Frazeysburg-Nashport to become the Tri-Valley Scotties.

Roseville consolidates with Philo and becomes part of the Philo Electrics, reducing membership to nine teams.

The River View Black Bears join, bringing the league to ten teams.

River View leaves the league, reducing membership to nine teams.

River View rejoins the league, while the Coshocton Redskins and Meadowbrook Colts also join, bringing membership to twelve teams. The league begins competition in two divisions. The Big School Division includes John Glenn, Maysville, Philo, River View, Sheridan, and Tri-Valley. The Small School Division includes Coshocton, Crooksville, Meadowbrook, Morgan, New Lexington, and West Muskingum.

Maysville moves to the Small School Division, and Morgan moves to the Big School Division.

Morgan moves to the Small School Division, and Maysville moves to the Big School Division.

River View boys and girls move to the Small School Division. New Lexington boys and West Muskingum girls move to the Big School Division as divisions change from total OHSAA enrollment numbers to gender-specific OHSAA enrollment numbers.
